I’ve Always Wanted to be a Writer…

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a writer. Yes, I know. Blogging is writing! But I want to write a book. A novel. I want to hold the crisp clean pages of a novel that bears my name.

One thing that has always stopped me has been the knowledge that one of the major publishing houses in America would never publish anything I wrote. A defeatist attitude, perhaps, but it’s kept me from writing.  Now, I’m rethinking it. I just might write the next great American novel because of these Book Publishers. I’ve never really been aware of self-publishing, but these guys have been in business for more than two decades. I looked through their book store, and a ton of people use them to get their voices heard.

Now, I just need a title…

Asheville, NC

Have I mentioned lately how much I miss North Carolina? Do you see this beautiful picture? The trees! I miss the trees! Often, I’ll say that to my friends, and one of them will inevitably point to a tree and exclaim, “Look! There’s a tree!”

They just don’t get it.

I miss trees. See the trees?

People don’t realize how beautiful North Carolina is. Asheville, NC is in the mountains of the state, and that’s where this beautiful picture was taken. When I move back to NC (one day it will happen), Ashville is on my list of places to consider.

I found this great website, Properties Asheville, that lists some amazing properties in the area.  A lot of them are fixer uppers, but with a view like that… I’d say it’s definitely worth it (especially when you check out the property prices!).

All I Want for Christmas

I’m not a huge online shopper. I usually don’t go beyond E-bay or Barnes and Noble when it comes to online shopping. I’ve always seen the commercials for Overstock.com, but I was always turned off by their tagline – It’s all about the O. But this year, they’ve got a giveaway going on that I can’t resist! You can win any product offered on overstock.com up to $1,000 – and you can enter each day!

It’s super easy – all you have to do is sign up!

Go to the All I want for Christmas Giveaway, select an image that describes you, choose what you’d like to win, and give them your contact information. It’s that simple! Then you choose your gift and e-mail it to a friend (winAToverstockDOTcom). You can also choose five friends who you would like to win with you! If they sign up as well, and you win, they get to win, too! How cool is that?

This is a five-day contest (Dec 3-8), and on the last day, you also have the chance to win 5 gifts – up to $5,000!

I didn’t find out about it until today, but you can bet that I’ll be entering every day through the end of the contest. For today’s gift, I chose the Santiago Full-size bed. Isn’t it gorgeous? Right now, I only have the metal frame that holds your mattress off the floor. This bed would look amazing in my room!

Here’s some more information about the contest:

Fundraising Resource

As most of you know, I work in the non-profit sector. More specifically, I work in development, which, for those of you who aren’t familiar with non-profits, is the fundraising department of the organization. I understand full well just how hard it is to raise the funds needed to provide whatever service your non-profit provides. Most non-profits have lofty goals and incredible vision and mission statements. People go into the world of non-profits because they want to change the world.

That’s why I’m loving this website. USA Fundraising is a resource for non-profits that provides tips, ideas, news, and advice to help non-profits develop productive fundraising strategies. In their navigation, they’ve even categorized their ideas from Church Fundraisers, Cheer Fundraisers, Sports Fundraisers, and even Online Fundraising.

This website can really help a new or smaller non-profit develop a fundraising strategy that will enable them to complete their mission. I wish there were more resources like this available to non-profits – especially since these ideas are at no cost to the non-profit, which is rarely the case.

Being a Postie

I really like Pay Per Post. I’ve made more than $30 for 4 posts so far (assuming they all get approved). I first heard about Pay Per Post more than a year ago when it first came out. I signed up, but never used it. More recently, I’ve found myself in a position where I really need extra cash so I thought I’d try and make some through this blog – especially since I spend so much time here!

What I like the most about PPP is that there are usually such a wide variety of opportunities that it’s not a stretch to find one that wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb in the middle of all of my original content. I don’t want to have a post advertising a bathroom faucet in the middle of my personal entries, but it’s pretty easy to make a post about touring Charleston personal and fit right in. Other paid advertising sites just don’t have that kind of variety. And the opportunities that I qualify for range from $5-$20 a post. That’s also something you won’t generally find on other sites like PPP.

All in all, I’m happy with my choice to start using Pay Per Post. I love to blog! I love the community that has been created here. So it makes sense for me to take this hobby of mine and try to make it financially beneficial to me. Every little bit helps.

PPP – A Problem

Since signing up for Pay Per Post and taking opportunities, I’ve discovered a significant rise in spam comments/pingbacks.

Ugh.

Ready for the Holidays?

October is almost over… I can’t believe it! This year has flown by. Christmas is coming soon! And Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love the sights, sounds, and smells of it. There’s no other holiday like it (Festivus doesn’t count!). One of the best parts of Christmas, to me, is the Christmas cards. I love walking into my Granny’s house and seeing her wall adorned with the many cards people have sent her. I always want to send Christmas cards, but I always wait too late. That’s why this post is coming to you in October! I am bound and determined to get my Christmas cards done this year – before Christmas!

And there’s a great website that will help me do it. Tinyprints.com can make beautiful Christmas cards for you and your family! And they have more to choose from than regular old photo holiday cards. I love what their website says:

Who says you have to have a big ol’ photo on your holiday cards anyway? Actually, we might have on our Holiday Photo Cards page, but never mind that. This holiday greeting selection is specifically for the photo demure and design savvy centric. Personalizing your holiday greeting cards sans the photo can be just as creative and rewarding. Remember, it’s all about brightening friends’ and relatives’ holiday season with festive, personalized stationery. We make it a cinch to send thoughtful holiday sentiments and have fun doing it. Really!

That’s definitely right up my alley. They even have business Christmas cards for the more corporate types.

Oh! I just love this time of year (except for the snow, of course)!

One of my favorite cities – Charleston

You all know that I’m a Southern girl at heart. I may not live there anymore, but I definitely left my heart in the South. I may be from North Carolina, but there’s no denying that one of the most beautiful cities in the South is Charleston, SC. I’ve only been there once, but it was memorable. I can’t wait to go again. It has everything – the ocean, the beautiful Southern sky, great food, and, of course, incredible sweet tea.

I remember flying into Charleston in October of last year. As the plane landed, I could see beautiful trees that had turned from a luscious green to a fiery golden red. The view literally took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I was in Charleston for a conference, but at night I got to walk around the historic district and take in the sights and the smells. There’s almost nothing better than walking at night while a gentle autumn breeze brings you the scent of the salty ocean. And the food – my goodness there’s some fantastic food to be had in Charleston! There’s so much rich history in that city, and I wish that I had been able to take a few guided tours to get everything out of it. It certainly would have been helpful! I could spend more time seeing the city and learning about the city. The next time I go (October 2008), I hope to go on some of the Charleston Tours offered by Trusted Tours (other cities are also availabe, including Chicago Tours).

My favorites include the Pub Walk of Charleston and the Old South Charleston Carriage Tour. Can you imagine touring Charleston in a carriage? It must be absolutely beautiful! I can’t wait until next fall so I can go back!

NC Natural

I’m a North Carolina girl through and through. I may live in Denver, but not a day goes by that I don’t think about my gorgeous home state. So when I saw a PPP opportunity that highlights a NC website, I knew I had to take it.

NC Natural is your guide to North Carolina culture, entertainment, and nature. There’s even a listing of books that either take place in NC or are about NC. It’s definitely all things NC. I love it!

But my favorite part of the website has to be the Coupons. If you shop one of these online major retailers by clicking through on the NC Naturals coupon site, not only do you get to save some cash, but NC Naturals gets a “referral fee” helping them keep their site low on ads. It’s a win-win opportunity!

There are AllPosters.com coupons, Apple Store deals, Eddie Bauer deals, PetSmart deals, and so many more! This isn’t just a site of random online retailers – you can actually save a lot of money at stores you want to shop at – and probably already do! This site has definitely been bookmarked on my end. Happy Shopping!

One Way to Save a Little Cash

I’ve mentioned briefly before that I’m struggling a lot financially. It’s really tough once you have to rely on yourself and not your parents to take care of everything! One thing that I’ve learned to use to save a little money and lighten the load is coupons. Coupons are pretty incredible if you’ll just take the time to find and use them.

In fact, using coupons from couponchief.com helps me dream a little bit about the Christmas gifts I can get my family this year.

Red Envelope is one of my favorite online stores, and I love to look and see what I can get for my mom. They have some incredible jewelry and other gifts, and with Red Envelope coupons you can get 15% off your entire order!

My stepdad loves his digital camera, and I’d love to update the one he has. With Best Buy coupons, I can save up to 15% on the perfect gift!

It’s easier to enjoy Christmas more and to really look forward to the holiday season when you know that you can afford some things that you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to afford for your family members. Thanks to Coupon Chief, I can!
