Well done, Durham

by Mandi

I haven’t lived in Durham, NC in nearly 4 years but I still consider it my home. It’s definitely my hometown.

And on Monday night, the Durham city council made me proud. They unanimously passed a resolution supporting civil marriage equality for same-sex couples.

Now, in reality, this resolution does nothing; it’s a state law that bans same-sex marriage. But the city has taken a stand and declared that they support gay marriage.

Thank you, Mayor Bill Bell and council members.

What really gets to me are the people who oppose legalizing gay marriage. I’d never put much thought into it before. As a Christian, I knew that homosexuality was “wrong” but I still never thought that it should be illegal. And it baffles me that anyone would ever want it to be.

Let’s take a look at some of these:

Furthermore, North Carolina is considered one of the states in the “Bible-Belt.”  There are quite a few of us who believe in the inerrancy of the Word of God, and thus are very much opposed to the concept of same-sex unions.  The Word of God is very clear.  Same sex unions are despicable to God. If you doubt me, read your Bible.

And what’s your point? If God tells you not to marry someone of the same sex, don’t marry someone of the same sex. Don’t try and stop someone else from doing something just because you’re too closed minded to see past the end of your nose. I know of churches who believe that smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and going to the movies are despicable to God, but I don’t see anybody trying to make those things illegal.

To Ms. Cole-McFadden specifically,

On your Durham City Council webpage you list your membership in the West Durham Baptist Church.  You even mention that you are the Sunday School Superintendent.  My question to you is simple: How can you instruct Sunday School, or guide Sunday School instructors, if you, yourself have not read the Word of God?  If you have read the Word of God, then I trust that you voted against this resolution?  For surely, you would not argue with God? (“Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker” Isaiah 45:9)  But I know that the council voted unanimously in favor of this resolution and as a result I question the sincerity of your faith.

This just makes me unbelievably angry. Who are you to question anybody’s faith? Isn’t that your God’s job, not yours?

What does faith have to do with legislation? I understand that, as Christians, you want your lifestyles to be moral and clean and upright, and that you oppose things that you perceive to go against your faith and ideals. I really do understand that. But why can’t you live your life the way you think you should live it without trying to force your faith into legislation that dictates the way everybody should behave?

The way I see it, the Durham city council has their eyes open. They see equality in all people, and are trying to give equal privilege to all people, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

If only the state (hell, the country) would go so far.

Can We Be Done Now?

The whole debate over Michael Vick being allowed to play football is dumb and should be over.

He committed a crime, was convicted of that crime, and was punished for the crime. Let the man have his life back.

Can we move along now people?

Social Media Isn’t a Fad

I’m loving this video. It gives me warm fuzzies to see my passion for something validated (even though it doesn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know).

Just a quick note…

by Mandi

I don’t think I’ve ever said anything about Sarah Palin on this blog.  I could probably argue that I abstained because I couldn’t find anything nice to say about her… but then I’d have to stop writing this post. In all honesty, it’s because all of her political brouhaha was happening in the middle of my forced to be silent hiatus.

But now? Can I just say:

Sarah Palin is a blooming idiot who should never open her mouth in public.

What is the place of Science?

by Mandi

“…it is the place of science only to observe.  To seek cause where it may be found, but to realize that there are many things in the world for which no cause shall be found; not because it does not exist, but because we know too little to find it. It is not the place of science to insist on explanation – but only to observe, in the hopes that the explanation will manifest itself.”

I found that gem in an unlikely place – Voyager by Diana Gabaldon.

Women and Sexuality

by Mandi

When my faith outwardly changed, so did my worldview. And with it, my thoughts on sexuality.

As an evangelical Christian, I was never told specifically that sex was bad. But I was definitely taught that it was taboo. It was something to be ashamed of, something that no one spoke of.

Of course, in my rebellious mind that made sex enticing. But my worldview at the time was such that, if I went and had sex, I’d be easy. A slut.

And now that I’m sitting back and looking at what society has to say, rather than religion… it isn’t any easier. There are people who believe that women should not be afraid of their sexuality or repress it. There are people who believe that women and men are wholly equal and should be treated so in every way, including their sexuality. But there are still a great deal of people who believe that women should be held to a different standard than men. That women should not enjoy sex, and for god’s sake if they do don’t tell anybody about it.

This article talks about the idea of women undermining their own sexuality in response to societal whim:

Aware that others will be judging them, it makes women wonder if they’re withholding their sexuality “enough.” Or it makes them proud that they do. Either way, it says that repressing yourself is an important part of sexuality and relationships. And that’s a destructive idea.

Women are caught in a historical collision between the sexual values of the past and future. Religion, the media and our families are sending out contradictory messages about sexuality that are driving women crazy.

Consider: Today’s woman is supposed to be sexy, but not too sexy. She’s supposed to be responsive enough to validate her partner, but not too aggressive or hard to please. Sexual, but not lusty. Not frigid, but not quite red hot. Her sexuality should express love, not lust.

In short, she has to be sexual in just the right way, regardless of her actual feelings or needs. To conform, to be an acceptable female, women have to carefully modulate, and therefore undermine, their own sexuality.

And you know, I agree with a lot of what the article says, but I believe it’s missing a key point. The article points its finger at women for doing this to ourselves, and while it has an air of truth to it, it misses the fact that men and women both erroneously hold to these conflicting ideals – perpetuating the cycle. The fact of the matter is that women wouldn’t feel the need to repress their sexuality, to be something they’re not, if our men didn’t make us feel that showing any hint of sexuality outside of the bedroom (and even sometimes inside) was embarrassing, immoral, or just plain wrong.

Remember When?

by Mandi

If only more people saw things this clearly:

Margaret is it just me or did combing your hair become optional when going out in public?  I’ve been watching news clips of these town hall free-for-alls and we have definitely become a nation of tired,  poor, and huddled masses  clearly tempest-tossed, but without access to a good beauty salon.   Universal Hygiene – now that is something I could get behind.  And all of them are asking for their America back.  I wonder which America that would be?

Would that be the America where the Supreme Court picks your president instead of counting all the votes?  Would that be the America where rights to privacy are ignored?  Would that be the America where the Vice President shoots his best friend in the face?  Or would that be the America where an idiot from Alaska and a college drop-out with a radio show could become the torchbearers for the now illiterate Republican party?

I fear that would not be the America they want back.  I fear that the America they want back is the one where black men don’t become President.

There’s more, go read it. This give me hope that there are still people in this country who actually have a lick of sense.

I once posted about how I want the fairy tale.

I stumbled onto this gem just now, and it pretty much sums up how I feel:

Adipositivity

I am really enjoying this website (some images nsfw). There are some very striking images of larger women… and many of them are absolutely beautiful.

What I can’t figure out is why I can look at these women and see beauty, but when I look at myself I rarely do.
