I’m Coming Out

Posted by Mandi on January 13th, 2009 . Filed under: Personal .

It’s official. I talked to my boss today and told him I’d be leaving sometime in the next few months. And I told him that part of the reason was because I could no longer sign the statement of faith. So let me finally once and for all say what I’ve wanted to say here for so long…

I do not believe in God.

I’ve said those words aloud to a select few people. It’s freeing to state them here.

Maybe now I can go back to how I used to be, and actually write again.

How I miss writing here everyday.

Well, I remain a faithful reader of your blog, both senses intended. Which is that, I still believe in God myself, but I will continue to read your blog with interest and sympathy. No one should be expected to keep dialing the phone if the other end never picks up, right? My best wishes to you as you continue your journey, and I do hope you start blogging again, soon.

    Peace….Scott

    Wow

Well I truly hope that your struggle with this is finally over. Its clearly been hard. I can’t welcome you to a team, like I have seen done for conversions the other way. As we, the faithless, are not a monolithic organized group of similarly thinking people. All I can offer is that for me, life is simpler, I have extra time (compared to those I know who are church bound), and I don’t spend a lot of time with the nonexistant. I’m certainly not saying all theists think and do exactly the same thing. I’m just trying to say that because there is nothing to fear, living life as you are most comfortable is the way to go.

The hardest part, as you may have experienced, is getting and retaining a the same sense of community that is relatively easy with a community organizing mechanism like a church.

However there are a great many things that enable the same thing until you can find a strong human personal relationship. If you ever want to talk privately just email me.

I hope you can be, and feel, freer and comfortable now! I truly do.

Coming out as an atheist takes considerable courage. And yes, that is what you just did. An atheist is simply someone who does not believe that the claim “God(s) exist” is true.

Now I’d encourage you to check out the rapidly growing and dynamic atheist community on the web. There are more of us out there than most people realize, and we would love to hear more about what led you to this point.

You know, I’m finding more and more blogs by poeple who have traveled a similar journey as you (surely not the same).

    Perhaps you are interested?

I am truly sorry you have lost your faith.  There is no true freedom apart from God (yes, specifically the Christian God of the Bible).  To quote Lisa Bevere: “There is freedom in submission (referring, of course, to submitting one’s life to God – and no, not islam [I am aware of the meaning of that name]), and there is slavery in “independence”.monolithic organized group – i.e. religion = deathJesus = LifeIt’s that simple.  I’ve checked out some of the blogs and stuff you have rolled and linked to and it’s clear to me that those folks are much smarter than I am in probably all but one area: I know that God is smarter than any human.’K, well, bye.
