J: Fair point. It’s interesting to speculate on the social trends behind this shift. Why is polygamy popular in desert cultures (like Patriarch-era Israel) but not in prosperous cities (like Jerusalem in Jesus’ time, and Greece when Paul was proselytising)?

My best guess is it’s cos polygamy creates a large population of guys who are Not Getting Any. In desert tribes, you can just kick those guys out and wait for them to Get Theirs due to dehydration, starvation, unexpected lions, etc. In cities and other human-friendly environments, they’re more likely to survive long enough to gang up and Get Medieval on your ass. Institutionalised monogamy is a pre-emptive defence against that sort of social trend.

Any thoughts?

Lots of OT patriarchs were polygamists, including David and his son (the wisest man in the world) Solomon. But past the cross? Nada. Didn’t happen with God’s blessing!

Doesn’t stop those guys from wanting more, more, more, though, I guess.

So those would suggest that biblically, God wasn’t down with polygamy.

Didn’t Isaac have two wives? I’m sure there were other patriarchs that went multiple - will have to look it up.

I think that art student was doing this as a stunt and no actual conceptions took place. In other words, she wanted to shock …looks like it worked!

Polygamy - agree with what you said. The idea of young women being forced to marry men old enough to be their fathers - well this is not a female honouring society.

So to purposely impregnate yourself and then abort it is art eh? She said that it was a “myth” that ovaries and a uterus were made to only “birth a child” in her article where she explains what she did to herself during the past year. What else are ovaries and a uterus used for in the body???

But if that’s “art” then Hitler was an artist too.

Well there’s 1 Corinthians 7:2, “But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.”

And there’s all the stuff Jesus said about divorce and how remarrying causes you to commit adultery.

So those would suggest that biblically, God wasn’t down with polygamy.

I dont know what is up with that woman. Some people are just sick. She doesnt represent anyone with that sort of nonsense. Those drugs are not fun (bloody and very painful) and how did she get them in the first place? You need a prescription. Im guessing its not true.

Creepiest part to me about those polygamists was that the whole town seemed to be in on it. Every previous interview with resident that news crews tried to have there (before the raid) they were secretive and not outgoing to friendly (which is opposite of how I found most southerners and texans to typically be). Its like they knew what they were doing was wrong but just wanted to keep doing it.

not too keep harping on this, but I am just interested… Biblically, and literally, is there anything in the bible that clearly exposes what they were doing was wrong?
