This sounds like a silly idea, but have you considered joining a Dungeons and Dragons group? It's like MMORPGs only even more imaginative, and with more direct social contact.

I don't play myself, but a lot of the nicest, most interesting people I know enjoy this kind of eclectic game. You just need to find a good group.

Also less painfully addictive than online gaming.

aw cripes, My PhD lasted an extra 6 months because of Ultima Online. Then, a year before my daughter was born, I had been hooked into World of Warcraft, and even got my wife hooked into it.

MMORPGs are insanely addictive. Its been so bad, that I have deja vu when the scenery in real life reminds me of scenery in WoW.

I find MMOs games so much more alive because of the other poeple. If you manage to get away from thie kiddies and idiots playing the game, you genereally can find some realy fun people to talk with about a lot of things.

There is no way I have time for a crack habit like an MMO, so I am steering clear for now. Maybe lil Techina will like MMOs later and want to play with me! :)
