Escapism and Medievia
Posted by Amanda on April 13th, 2008 . Filed under: Personal .As I write this, my Medievia character (Maranwe) is on a ship killing fae crabs.
Don’t ask.
I’m completely addicted to this game again. Part of it is the game. It’s genuinely fun to run around and kill things and run quests, etc. But the other part of it is the community.
Medievia is just a game. I know that. But it’s more than a game.
It’s my way of finding the community that I desperately want that I’m not getting anywhere else. As much as I love my friends, they all lead pretty busy lives. They’ve got their own crap to manage. So I turn to online communities to find the relationships that I’m craving.
And for me, it works.
Most people think I’m insane and that you can’t find real community online, but it simply isn’t true. And the friends I make online are friends that will follow me wherever I go.
So this is one form of escapism for me.
What about you guys? Do any of you have things you do to “escape” from reality?

aw cripes, My PhD lasted an extra 6 months because of Ultima Online. Then, a year before my daughter was born, I had been hooked into World of Warcraft, and even got my wife hooked into it.
MMORPGs are insanely addictive. Its been so bad, that I have deja vu when the scenery in real life reminds me of scenery in WoW.
I find MMOs games so much more alive because of the other poeple. If you manage to get away from thie kiddies and idiots playing the game, you genereally can find some realy fun people to talk with about a lot of things.
There is no way I have time for a crack habit like an MMO, so I am steering clear for now. Maybe lil Techina will like MMOs later and want to play with me!

This sounds like a silly idea, but have you considered joining a Dungeons and Dragons group? It’s like MMORPGs only even more imaginative, and with more direct social contact.
I don’t play myself, but a lot of the nicest, most interesting people I know enjoy this kind of eclectic game. You just need to find a good group.
Also less painfully addictive than online gaming.
