Fluffy White Stuff

by Mandi

Do you see the date stamp on this entry? That’s right – it’s October 21, 2007. And today is Denver’s first snow.

WHAT?

It’s too early for that! *sigh*

Somebody remind me why I live in Colorado…

This is my courtyard – and it’s still snowing. In fact, the flakes are getting fatter the later it gets.

And this is what I saw then I left for church this morning. It is entirely too early in the season to have enough snow to actually cover half a car.

Ready for the Holidays?

by Mandi

October is almost over… I can’t believe it! This year has flown by. Christmas is coming soon! And Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love the sights, sounds, and smells of it. There’s no other holiday like it (Festivus doesn’t count!). One of the best parts of Christmas, to me, is the Christmas cards. I love walking into my Granny’s house and seeing her wall adorned with the many cards people have sent her. I always want to send Christmas cards, but I always wait too late. That’s why this post is coming to you in October! I am bound and determined to get my Christmas cards done this year – before Christmas!

And there’s a great website that will help me do it. Tinyprints.com can make beautiful Christmas cards for you and your family! And they have more to choose from than regular old photo holiday cards. I love what their website says:

Who says you have to have a big ol’ photo on your holiday cards anyway? Actually, we might have on our Holiday Photo Cards page, but never mind that. This holiday greeting selection is specifically for the photo demure and design savvy centric. Personalizing your holiday greeting cards sans the photo can be just as creative and rewarding. Remember, it’s all about brightening friends’ and relatives’ holiday season with festive, personalized stationery. We make it a cinch to send thoughtful holiday sentiments and have fun doing it. Really!

That’s definitely right up my alley. They even have business Christmas cards for the more corporate types.

Oh! I just love this time of year (except for the snow, of course)!

Missed Out on Love?

by Mandi

Do you ever look back on decisions you’ve made and wonder if you’d only made a different choice then you’d have the life you should have rather than the craptastic life you do have?

I read an article today about why women shouldn’t watch romantic movies. It was dead on. They make you want something that doesn’t exist! My whole life I’ve always thought that if I just had someone to love who loved me back, then I would be happy and could get through anything.

Twenty-five years (almost) of singleness doesn’t do much to detract from that notion.

I’ve been in love once in my life. And I still think about the guy from time to time, and I can’t help but thinking that if I had done something a little differently, then he would be the love of my life. But he’s not. In fact, I seriously doubt that I ever cross his mind these days. But he definitely crosses mine. And when he does, I settle back and imagine… Imagine if things had worked, and I was married. Imagine if I had kids. That’s the stuff dreams are made of. At least for me.

Have I missed out on love? Perhaps. I may be destined to remain single for the rest of my days. But maybe not. Dreams do come true sometimes.

A few things that annoy me…

by Mandi

I just saw these “I Watch Joel Osteen” pins. That’s annoying to me on so many levels. Everybody knows of my faith struggles, but they haven’t changed my opinion of Joel Osteen. I don’t like him. I think he’s a fraud. And these pins are essentially equating him with Jesus (only because the Icthus fish symbol is symbolic of Jesus).

The Maine School Board has approved giving out contraception to Middle Schoolers. Now I’m all for giving it out in high school. But to 10 year olds? That’s just… I have no words for my feelings on the issue.

This article in Christianity today about “Red Letter Christians” makes me want to scream out loud. Stan Guthrie essentially says that because this group of Christians tends to have more Democratic views, then they aren’t quite as Christian as everyone else. At least, that’s the feeling I got from reading the article. Tony Campolo’s response, however, rocked!

Min’s a Rock Star!

by Mandi

The problem of the missing post has been solved! Thanks to Min, he discovered that this template* was excluding posts made in the “Personal” category. Then I was able to find the coding for that and change it!

Way to go, Min!

*I’m beginning to think this template is more trouble than it’s worth…even though I do love it so…

One of my favorite cities – Charleston

by Mandi

You all know that I’m a Southern girl at heart. I may not live there anymore, but I definitely left my heart in the South. I may be from North Carolina, but there’s no denying that one of the most beautiful cities in the South is Charleston, SC. I’ve only been there once, but it was memorable. I can’t wait to go again. It has everything – the ocean, the beautiful Southern sky, great food, and, of course, incredible sweet tea.

I remember flying into Charleston in October of last year. As the plane landed, I could see beautiful trees that had turned from a luscious green to a fiery golden red. The view literally took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I was in Charleston for a conference, but at night I got to walk around the historic district and take in the sights and the smells. There’s almost nothing better than walking at night while a gentle autumn breeze brings you the scent of the salty ocean. And the food – my goodness there’s some fantastic food to be had in Charleston! There’s so much rich history in that city, and I wish that I had been able to take a few guided tours to get everything out of it. It certainly would have been helpful! I could spend more time seeing the city and learning about the city. The next time I go (October 2008), I hope to go on some of the Charleston Tours offered by Trusted Tours (other cities are also availabe, including Chicago Tours).

My favorites include the Pub Walk of Charleston and the Old South Charleston Carriage Tour. Can you imagine touring Charleston in a carriage? It must be absolutely beautiful! I can’t wait until next fall so I can go back!

I’m Going to Scream!

by Mandi

I’m having issues getting a post I’ve written to show up on my main page.

Any thoughts on why this one shows up when this one won’t?

It seems to somehow be related to the post title (though I’ve changed it and it still doesn’t work). When I simply title it “Test” it showed up on the main screen. When I changed it, it disappeared. I’ve tried several different titles, none of them work. Even changing it back to “Test” doesn’t work.

Truth and Work Ethics

by Mandi

I love getting advice from women who are old enough to have life experience to back up what they’re saying. Which is funny since I love giving advice and don’t always have that experience (what twenty-something does?).

But this woman I work with told me a story today about a job she had when she was younger. She worked for a man who was legally blind, but could still read if the paper was about half an inch from his face. She had typed a letter to send to someone and (this was in the days before computers) made a mistake. To correct it, she whited it out and typed over it. It was obvious that she had made a mistake, but she didn’t think her boss would catch it because of his impairement. After he was finished reading the letter, he handed it back to her and said, “Let me ask you a question. Are you ever going to meet these people?” She replied, “No.” “So if this is the only part of you that these people are ever going to know, do you still want to send it like that?”

She immediately took the letter back and re-did it properly.

She said that’s when she got “it.” That’s when she understood the value of a good and decent work ethic. Then she said one more thing that seemed profound (though probably isn’t).

You’re hired for what you know, and you’re fired for who you are.

That really struck me. I’d never though about it before, but it’s very much the reality.

I’ve always though that I have this great work ethic. The reality? It needs improvement. I was just awarded employee of the quarter from my department (literally less than an hour ago), and even though it made this day so much better than it had been, I know that I can be an even better employee than I am. The work that I do is a direct reflection of my character. The spirit with which I do that work is also a direct reflection on my character. Every day I should strive to improve my character – and that means improving my work ethic and the quality of my work.

Here’s hoping that I, too, “get it”when it comes to working.

NC Natural

by Mandi

I’m a North Carolina girl through and through. I may live in Denver, but not a day goes by that I don’t think about my gorgeous home state. So when I saw a PPP opportunity that highlights a NC website, I knew I had to take it.

NC Natural is your guide to North Carolina culture, entertainment, and nature. There’s even a listing of books that either take place in NC or are about NC. It’s definitely all things NC. I love it!

But my favorite part of the website has to be the Coupons. If you shop one of these online major retailers by clicking through on the NC Naturals coupon site, not only do you get to save some cash, but NC Naturals gets a “referral fee” helping them keep their site low on ads. It’s a win-win opportunity!

There are AllPosters.com coupons, Apple Store deals, Eddie Bauer deals, PetSmart deals, and so many more! This isn’t just a site of random online retailers – you can actually save a lot of money at stores you want to shop at – and probably already do! This site has definitely been bookmarked on my end. Happy Shopping!

This post has been brought to you by NC Natural.

Happy Day!

by Mandi

So my Google Analytics code stopped working when I got the new theme. But it works again! Yay for trial and error! The only bad thing is that I had 3 days where it recorded 0 visits. Oh well, I suppose my traffic isn’t really something I should care about – and it’s really not the numbers that I care about. What I like finding out is which posts are the ones that people are interested in. So Happy Day! It works again!
