Stupid Message

There’s a church down the street from my apartment. My church doesn’t have a baptismal, so we use this other church’s facilities for our baptisms. I drove by it today, and the message on the sign stunned me. I was furious! What kind of Christ following people would have this message on their sign:

Members only.
Trespassers will be baptized.

Argh! There’s nothing right about that.

Church is for everyone. Church is not forced on anyone! Ever! At least, it’s not supposed to be.

Why does the church have to be like that?

Looks like a very poor attempt at humour.

Well that’s just crap. Because people who are seeking Christ are going to look at that sign in disgust. It perpetuates the negative perceptions people have of Christianity. Humor or not, it was in very very poor taste.

Absolutely. The sad thing is that it tells us a lot more about their theology than they would perhaps like us to know. The only good thing is that if that’s their attitude, it’s probably best that those who are seeking don’t go there.

Well, it’s definitely an attempt at humor. We live in a time where there are two types of church signs: those that try to be thoughtful and those that are informational.

Unfortunately, this attempt at humor doesn’t seem to make it. I don’t think this saying anything more about their theology than that they don’t have a problem making light of serious things.

Will it send someone away? Certainly possible– but the worse effect will be on those that drive by and think that this is all Christianity is about.

I agree that this is attempted humor gone horribly awry. Blech.

This is one of those times that you realize the church is focusing in only on itself. The church goers go “that is funny” and the non church goers think “how judgemental” and walk away.

Signs that do not say welcome, come, partake, relax and soak in God and his wisdom need be burned down.
