Converting Kirk Cameron
Jun 4th, 2007 by Amanda
Yahoo!’s People of the Web showcased Kirk Cameron last week. His name keeps coming up in my circles. For awhile, I didn’t like the ministry he shares with Ray Comfort, Way of the Master, but I’ve had to rework my thoughts and opinions. I really like Kirk Cameron. I admire his convictions and the courage he has to stick to them.
Cameron is 36 now and still has the boyish good looks of his TV character — but with a few of the wrinkles and creases that go along with self-reflection and fatherhood. He and his wife have six children, four adopted and two of their own.
He says he is more comfortable in his Christian skin today, his convictions just as strong, but without the isolating air of self-righteousness. He has reconciled with former “Growing Pains” cast members and even was part of a reunion show in 2000.
But Cameron says his priorities are very clear: God, family, career — in that order.
My opinion of Kirk was largely based on my opinion of Ray. I think Ray does more harm than good to the cause of Christ. His heart is good, and I know that. But the way he does things drives me nuts! Or maybe it’s really the banana thing that’s biased my opinion. Either way, it drove me away–and I’m a Christian! Imagine how unbelievers feel when they come across this ministry.
But I’ve watched some other clips now, and I really appreciate the effort that these men are putting forth in order to teach people about Jesus.

My Bible study went through some of the “Way of the Master” series and I really loved it. It challenged us all to share our faith more, and gave us some good tools for doing so. I was a little skeptical of some of their methods at first, but ended up changing my mind in the end, for the most part anyway. I guess all I’m saying is give it a chance.
I think Ray Comfort is a good evangelist, but not a good debater. He knows how to share the gospel well, but a lot of the stuff I’ve seen which turns me off from him is his ignorance in the area of creationism. The Firefighter story is powerful!
I think this says all that needs to be said:

You know, it really doesn’t. I mentioned the banana thing in my post. And how I don’t like it. There’s more to Kirk Cameron and his faith than Ray’s silly banana illustration.
Yes, but when you record a ridiculous segment such as the one above, I happen to think that your credibility (and perhaps even sanity) are less than stellar!
If he wants to be taken seriously, he’s going to have to distance himself from the likes of the fruitcake in the video, and also drop that rhetoric from his arsenal.
