More on the age of the earth
Aug 30th, 2006 by Amanda
I sat down and started rewatching the second half of The Age of the Earth by Kent Hovind. I had my pen and pad out to take notes so that I could write up the session and post it here. But then I thought, “Why?”
For starters, my own opinion of Hovind has changed a lot over the last few weeks. I think he is probably one of the most unChrist-like men on the planet. One of the things I got so upset about the last time I posted on this video series was that the majority of the response was evolutionists calling me stupid. I realized that when I watched the last video that Hovind does the exact same thing. He is continually calling evolutionists stupid, dumb, or my favorite, dumb on purpose. And he does it in the name of Christ!
I am not okay with that.
Then I realized that, while I still believe in a young earth and the literal account of Creation given in Genesis, using Dr. Hovind’s videos is not going to get anyone in the evolutionist circles to take me seriously. Even if his information is solid (as I believe some of it is), no one would listen simply because it came out of Hovind’s mouth.
And finally, I realized that in the general scheme of things, whether or not you believe in an old earth or a young earth, it doesn’t matter. These beliefs are not central to the Christian faith and they do not determine whether or not you are a follower of Christ. Bickering and fighting about it does more harm than good!
So, I will not be continuing to write up the video series, although I do welcome opinion and discussion on the topic.

Good call. I watched his Age Of The Earth video and it full of lies. Such as the teaching of evolution causes the rise of crime, STDs and unwed mothers.
You may be not aware that Kent Hovind has been charged with tax evasion and threatening the IRS. He plead no contest for not getting building permits for his Dinosaur Adventure Land.
OMG (small blasphemy, heh)!!! You are starting to see past one of the most horrible brainwashing manipulating bigots ever! It isn’t all because off who he is, it’s the fact that he lies and tries to create truthiness instead of truth. If he could actually prove in a truthful honest not pushing his bs manner he would be taken serious. The reason why evolutionists are calling you stupid is not because you follow (in my opinion) stupid belief in creationisim, its the fact that you would use a dumbass as your manipulator who hides that by being your “source”. Although saying some of his stuff is right makes me wonder how much you’ve seen past his facade……trying to be nice in this situation and giving the benefit of a doubt does not work in this field. For example, if a scientist said something stupid as proof for evolution or the old Earth or the Big Bang, he would be mocked and called an idiot as you were. Perhaps there is some hope yet that your eyes will change, but always remember my open is your closed and your open is my closed.
Amanda,
I’m really not familiar with Hovind at all, but just the same I like that you’ve reminded yourself of the main thing. Arguments can be interesting and fun, and excellent learning experiences, but once everybody gets mad it’s hard to get it back. Grace is a gift that can’t be forced on people who don’t want it, but there are those who seek it. Pearls before swine.
reaper,
I like the last line of your comment, that’s pretty cool and pretty true.
Hello Amanda,
Here’s an interesting Scripture from Job 38.
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said:
2 “Who is this that darkens my counsel
with words without knowledge?
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
This goes both ways. Had this been a great issue God would have said here that it was fundamental. Instead He asks rhetorically “what do you know?”
It’s His measuring stick not Kent Hovind’s or anyone else’s. In Job God is clearly saying that He divides the “days” (Hebrew word used was yom which can also mean “age/era”). There is a discernment to be made here between the words and the Word. Christians must put their faith in the latter.
Hey Amanda:
I dropped by to thank you for leaving the comment at my BLOG. I’ll be back soon and will comment on the topic of this post. We’ll disagree on a few topics, but one of things I like about you is that we can actually discuss issues. I get tired of everyone taking swings at one another. Please keep it up.
Peace,
P. Del Ricci - Dark Glass
Thanks for posting this.
I plan to post on Hovind myself in a day or two.
I found your post through the Christian Carnival.
I found your post through the Christian Carnival, and I appreciate your tone. I posted an entry on my own blog about it, but in case you don’t have the opportunity to see that, I wonder if you’re acquainted with Kurt Wise? I’m not young earth myself–quite the opposite, I’m a theistic evolutionist–but Wise is probably the best exponent of the young earth position writing today. You might be interested in my review of his book Faith, Form, and Time.
Thanks for an excellent post!
