My Children Bore Me!

Awesome post by Freeman Hunt responding to an article written by a mother called, Sorry, but my children bore me to death!

The lies started when my eldest son was less than ten months old.

Invitations to attend a child’s birthday party or, worse, a singalong session were met with the same refrain: ‘I would love to but I just can’t spare the time.’

The nanny was dispatched in my place, and almost always returned complaining that my son had been singled out for pitiful stares by the other mothers.

I confess that I was probably ogling the merchandise at Harvey Nichols or having my highlights done instead. Of course I love my children as much as any mother, but the truth is I found such events so boring that I made up any excuse.

Unfortunately, this woman is for real. Check out Freeman Hunt’s breakdown of the article.

While this mother is obviously in need of an attitude adjustment (and maybe some ADD medication), I do agree that our culture caters to children too much. However, there’s a difference between buying your child the newest toy vs. playing with them and their toys. I predict that her sons will become overbearing parents, trying to avoid mommy’s mistake. Poor boys! Also, we all know that how children relate with their parents trains them in how to relate with people of that same gender in the future. Are they going to be insecure in their marriages?

Wow, what an awful woman she sounds. I wonder why she bothered to have children. How sad that ending part is… they no longer even ask her to take them to the park or play board games.

Of course it may be that the journalist exaggerated or took comments out of context to make a point. There is a bit of a tendency, sometimes, for parents to be ‘enslaved’ (as she put it) to their children, to ignore their marriages, to rush around trying to entertain children constantly with activity after activity, and it’s true that a bit of boredom (for the children) can spark creativity and imagination.

But how dreadful to have it IN PRINT that her children ‘bore her to death’. I was sometimes frustrated with mine but don’t think I was ever bored by them!

Unfortunately, if you read the article closely, you’ll see there’s no way a journalist could have misconstrued her words–there was no journalist. The mother in question wrote the article herself.
