Religion–what do you think?

One of the best quotes in Donald Miller’s book, Searching For God Knows What, is:

The very scary thing about religion, to me, is that people actually believe God is who they think He is.

What do you think about that statement? I want to hear from everyone, regardless of or your faith, or lack thereof.

That quote gets deeper the more you think about it. At first, it sounds like it’s coming from a non-believer, but then when you start to think about it, you realize that very few people have an accurate idea of God’s identity, as it’s laid out in the Bible. I know I don’t. The God I know is merciful, not vengeful, but how many times did God avenge His people or His name in the Bible? Even in Revelation He avenges his church.

Sounds like the quotee was in love with his own pen and was hoping we would say, “Man, that’s deep!” : )

We believe anything to be what we think it is – that’s what people do. That’s why 3 people watching a car wreck will have 3 different stories as to what happened.

Hopefully though, we can separate ourselves from our reactions to realize that we may be wrong. I’m not sure at what point in heaven we’ll have total knowledge of the Father – maybe it happens in an instant, and maybe it will be a continual process like marriage.

Yeah, it’s a bit scary – anything unknown usually is. We’ll be OK though…

God spoke this through the prophet Isaiah, and he recorded it in what we call Isaiah 55:8-9
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.

So yes, we as created beings have a flawed perception of who our Creator actually is. And Praise God! I’d hate to have all the answers, cause, sheesh, my head is messed up enough.

The hope though is that Jesus prayed that we be of not only one mind, but His mind. So that is what I see missing in your quotation, the hope that we can one day have a realistic vision of who God the Father is!
